Udayagiri and Khandagiri insights

Bhubaneswar has a lot of well-known tourist spots to check out. Among them, Khandagiri and Udayagiri are well-known spots for tourists. These hills showcase the history of Odisha.

The ancient caves, carved out of rock, originate from the 2nd century BCE, constructed under the rule of King Kharavela of the Mahameghavahana dynasty. They hold historical importance as residences for Jain monks, featuring detailed sculptures and inscriptions providing a glimpse into ancient Jain traditions and customs.

King Kharavela and other individuals were responsible for excavating a total of 117 caves on the Udayagiri, which is also referred to as Kumari Hill. Over the years, these caves have served as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. However, as time passed, the number of existing caves at Udayagiri has dwindled to 18, each holding its own unique stories and significance.

Among the remaining caves at Udayagiri, some notable names include the Rani Gumpha, Hathi Gumpha, and Ganesh Gumpha.
